Facebook is arguably the biggest and most successful social network on the planet, and businesses can use it to develop and amplify their branding in a highly effective way.
One way to make progress quicker on the platform is to see what works, and emulate it. You’re not here to reinvent the wheel (and you don’t have time anyway) so it makes sense to identify the key features of the biggest and most successful brands on Facebook today.
We are going to list out the top brands on the platform, and then we are going to analyse them, take them apart, drill down to the essence of their success.
As you would expect, the majority of these brands are famous in the world of music, movies and TV. But that doesn’t mean they don’t have to work hard to stay at the top of the Facebook tree.
Want proof? Take Vin Diesel. He is high up in the list. That means he’s bigger than Michael Jackson, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift, all arguably celebrities who have enjoyed much bigger success than he.
So he’s obviously doing something right (or his social media guy is).
That’s it not that difficult to get some real traction on Facebook as long as you get a few things right most of the time. Seriously, it isn’t.
But we learnt that video and images are always going to be useful on Facebook, whether you’re Shakira, or a company that sells websites. We also learnt that branding is really important. You may not have the biggest budget in the world, but if you have the loyalty of your customers you can move mountains (see Funding Circle and their approach).
If you help your customers it goes a long, long way (Moonfruit are certainly finding this to be the case) and if you’re Facebook, well…
Funnily enough, businesses are rocking Facebook right now. Some of them are perhaps the apple of Mark Zuckerberg’s eye (Burt’s’ Bees) while other businesses are simply talking to their customers, one at a time ( Kingstone Cider).
Anyhow, we’ll let you dig in. The first part of the report looks at the heady heights of the celebrities who will always dominate the platform (and Facebook). While part two of the report focuses in on businesses.
Both parts have real lessons for you if you run a business and want to use facebook as a marketing tool.

We know, it’s kind of ironic that Facebook’s pages should be right at the top of it’s own tree, but if we look at the pages, it all kind of makes sense, beyond the fact that the brand is one of the biggest in the world.
Well, it’s Facebook. And the pages gives the audience exactly what they want. With tips for using the apps and cross-promotional links outweighing any other kinds of content, it makes sense that there is a lot of engagement. Facebook has taken off on mobile in recent months and with the mix of content here, the app page, for example, is delivering real value to the audience.
Weird aspects include the fact that they have issued only two posts for the app page over the past two years. So they are not busy. But they know what works.
Some of the shares on all their pages run into the hundreds of thousands. The majority of the posts are images, and some have links.
However, those images that have commercial links or connections (i.e. to a Facebook product or service) have a lot of engagement.
Images rule (even with an almost deathly quiet page), and if your product is the main reason the page exists, feature it heavily.

There is not a lot that we can tell you about Shakira apart from what you already know. She is a megastar. But she’s not the only megastar, so that can’t be the reason why she is hovering near the top spot. She must be doing something else to drive so much clear and solid engagement. it’s the kind of engagement that other brands would kill for.
Let’s put it this way. Shakira obviously loves engaging with her fans, and it shows through the regular posting. It’s not an everyday thing, but there are a number of posts on the page, and they’re pretty frequent.
Perhaps most importantly from her point of view, she personally posts quite regularly too. add to this the fact that there are lots (and lots) of videos and photos, and you have what could quite easily be described as an online fan club.
Reward the loyalty of the people who are loyal to you with regular personal contact (it doesn’t have to be the boss, it could be members of the team). Give them value with what they want (in Shakira’s case it is the photos and the videos) and you will develop a fan club feel. Above all, make it personal.
The uber-famous movie actor is a popular choice for many people on Facebook, but he simply isn’t as famous as some of the stars further down the list, so how does he do it?
Well, we think it’s because he is simply in touch with his audience. There was a tragedy recently where another actor who was close to Diesel (and his fans) was killed in a car crash. Diesel has publicly addressed this on his page and it has resonated with fans.
He also shows a lot of intimate background details You get peeks into his life as an actor, and a general feeling that he is using Facebook as a kind of scrapbook. But there is nothing cynical about it. He knows he is a clear brand, but he’s approaching the page as a personal blog.
Find something that means something to your audience and put it front and centre. And update with unique, behind-the scenes content in the form of quickly accessible videos and images.
He uses his Facebook page as a merchandise focus. It’s essentially an ecommerce shop selling stuff you don’t necessarily get in the high street. It is also focused heavily on his bad boy image. We’ll give you a prize if you can find one image of him smiling throughout this whole page. We can’t.
There is less of Marshall (his real name) in this than there is Shakira in her page. He is more concerned with selling his brand.
In fact, this is an exercise in branding. Everything the fan would expect is here. From the lack of smiles to the music videos. And then there is the attitude. The message Eminem gives in his music and his press appearances is writ large here.
And that’s branding basics, people.
Capitalise on the message that you regularly try and promote. Use The Facebook page to send that message again and again. Through logos, videos and updates, everything should be about the brand.
Two football teams, and they’re crackers.
FC Barcelona and Real Madrid have provided fans with a colourful and football-themed Facebook page. Capitalising on the fact that the fan worship is about the game and the players more than anything else, the pages are full of videos and images showing these elements. And they post multiple times a day because that’s what their audience wants to see on their phones.
If you have a service or product that is strong and engaging (like this team has) cut the words out of the picture and go straight to visual. Use videos and colourful striking imagery, and the fans will follow.

Rihanna has done something quite smart with her Facebook page.
Instead of plastering it with videos (although she does post a fair few) she has embraced her fasn. They regularly submit their own videos (such as them rapping to Rihanna songs) and images that focus on Rihanna and her own striking image.
It’s a way to build a tribe, a real following. And it also means that there is an element of user-generated content to the page. This make it a truly interactive Facebook page, and gives a clear message to people who are struggling on Facebook.
Grab the loyalty that your audience has to your products and services and help them to express it. User-generated content (above and beyond comments) can fill your page and also build a tribe of loyal customers.
What is YouTube known for?
Videos.
That said, at first it seems kinda odd that the world’s biggest video channel would show just videos on their Facebook page. But stick with us on this one.
They do this in a rather quaint, old-fashioned spirit. Up until recently, linking back to your ‘man site’ from a satellite site was seen as the best way to build traffic.
YouTube doesn’t need traffic, but it has taken the Facebook page as the best way to share their best stuff. This works because it allows people to be YouTube fans. It gives them a place to be YouTube fans outside of YouTube.
In addition, it also keeps the branding front and centre by focusing on strong imagery and videos from other sources, but only stuff that matches YouTube’s feel.
Showcase your best stuff on Facebook as a way of building up traffic and loyalty for your main site.

What does a world-famous footballer and media icon do on his Facebook page? He fills it with pictures and videos of himself.
Seriously, it’s not just another scrapbook. This is branding done very well. Messi focuses on all the aspects of his life that his fans love (his family, his jet-setting lifestyle and his team) and fills up his page with these details. This means he stays ‘on-brand’ and that’s what his fans like.
Take the branding notes that your customers expect to see and make them a big part of your Facebook page. Are you a family business? Show the family. Do you all play video games in the office? Show them a picture of this.

Bob Marley was a reggae legend, and his music is perhaps not as important as what he meant to people. Famous for using a certain recreational drug, he was also a very mystical kind of guy, and this showed through in his messages.
He was a brand long before the Internet arrived though, and this means there is a massive fanbase out there that is buying into what he says more and more. The spike the Internet gave his popularity is considerable.
His most famous aspect when it comes to branding now is his message. Basically a happy and friendly peace and love ethic, the message is best encapsulated in quotes. So you’ll find many inspirational Marley quotes on his Facebook page, and they get shared like nobody’s business.
Use motivational quotes to connect with your audience. It’s a great way to build up loyalty and sharing.

What do you do when you have a cult show that is finally losing vast parts of its audience and much of it’s appeal as writers leave and ratings fall? You make Facebook your new home, with a page that offers the perfect mix of Facebook wins.
The Simpsons was absolutely huge in the 90s. It became so famous that US presidents criticized it (a recommendation in itself).
But then it started to become less popular and the way it started (a cult) is how it is now to a large degree. The show has an incredibly popular Facebook page, and this page is popular mainly because it does two things very well, it allows people to interact with the page through contests and giveaways that reward the high loyalty the show still enjoys, and it also updates feverishly, fuelling that now slightly geeky fan base with throwbacks to the old days. We’re talking catchphrases, in-jokes, everything that the fan base respects and expects.
Get your customers to interact with you through quizzes that reward loyalty. Update constantly with stuff that you know your customers like.

This is a business page, and it has all the hallmarks of what makes a highly effective Facebook business page. The company is huge and has literally millions of players for it’s poker games.
The beauty of online poker is that it is pretty much harmless. You can play for free and build up your poker skills and even take a punt on a real game for money if you wish. So there is a lot of fun to be had.
This page works hard to bring across that sense of fun. Imagery reflects the excitement behind high stakes poker (even if the stakes are not, technically, high) and there is lots of colour. The branding matches the gloss and sheen of the casino and the high quality image the company wants to project.
But then we get to the real engine behind the page. The company knows that it’s customers love deals, discounts and bonuses, so the entire page is full of them. Gifts are sent to players and there is a constant stream of deals that make playing the game even easier. They also post 2-3 times a day, which makes the page incredibly sticky for loyal customers looking for a deal.
And it works.
Match your imagery to your brand and the feelings people have when they think of your brand. Use Facebook as a place to give customers what they want. Keep the page worth visiting on a regular basis with regular posts.
Jackie Chan is one of the biggest actors in the world, mainly because of a few big-budget movies that he was in with Hollywood stars. However, he also happens to be one of the nicest people in the world, and he does all his own stunts. In other words, he’s very real and human.
And this comes across in his Facebook page. He has a ton of personal photos and stuff that obviously means a lot to him, and he plays up his fun side too, so fans get the full Jackie experience.
Crucially, he also does one thing that businesses can learn from. He publishes content that is exclusive to his Facebook page. You can’t see it anywhere else. This makes it a page worth visiting.
That’s why he gets millions of likes for a picture of himself (see link below).
Publish stuff that your fans can’t see anywhere else. It makes it worth visiting your page. If you’re a business, this means discounts etc that customers cannot find anywhere else. It’s all about exclusivity.
Beyonce is similar to Rihanna in that she works in the same musical genre, and is even married to the guy (Jay Z) that discovered Rihanna. She doesn’t run her page in the same way though, and there are clear lessons to be learnt here about Facebook and how you can use it to develop a huge fanbase that wants to spend money wth you.
She takes absolute personal control of the page. There is nothing on this Facebook page that the superstar hasn’t been involved in, from personal photos to raising awareness through the charity work she is involved in or interested in. It’s all Beyonce.
This shows a level of activity that is phenomenal for such a big star. And when you consider that some companies don’t update their pages even once a week, it gives clear lesson for everyone who runs a page.
Take control and a personal interest in your page if you want to see it make real progress. The key lesson is simple. Even if you are incredibly busy and the page is spiralling out of control, be involved. If you have a community manager who does this sort of thing, be involved. Beyonce even shares other people’s photos regularly.

Linkin Park is one of those bands that has a fiercely loyal fanbase. It simply won’t go away. So the Facebook page is full of the expected fan-specific content and exclusivity. So far, so scrapbook and tour guide material.
But one thing that the Linkin Park page does very well in competitions. The page really focuses on giving away great stuff to people who show loyalty through knowing trivia and other stuff, the fans basically. But on top of that, the page also gives plaudits and awards to creativity. Some of the competitions really focus on bringing out new talent, something that the fans of Linkin Park appreciate.
So this is all about boosting that loyalty by giving the audience something of value through great competitions that have real meaning.
Use contests with prizes and stuff that have meaning. This helps you to connect with your audience more. It isn’t always about discounts. It might be about winning a related product or service, or just you helping your customers out for a month. If it means something, it will resonate more.

Mr Bean is a creation of the famous comic Rowan Atkinson. His character has made movies, enjoyed a very successful TV career, and become a bit of a national treasure. The entire shtick has been carried out with hardly any words, with Bean possibly having said absolutely nothing throughout his career. This is what makes him funny and such a huge international brand. With no words, there is no language barrier.
So a lot of his stuff is visual, as you can see from the Facebook page. The visual stuff is very sharable, and this is why the brand enjoys such a high profile. It is used to sell more Bean stuff too, which must keep Mr Atkinson very happy.
But the Bean brand on Facebook gives us one clear lesson about how to be popular on the platform. Being funny goes a long way. If you are a business that is funny all the time, then make this a big thing on your page. People like it, it gets shared.
If you can’t be funny all the time (or you simply shouldn’t) then do it now and then. It’s a quick win on Facebook, and if you’re stuck, go to the Bean page for a quick laugh.

But the company also does pretty much everything that a business needs to do on Facebook, so they are a perfect lesson on how to get it right.
They run contests, use videos native to the Facebook platform in a very effective way (see the link below) and generally use the platform as an effective ecommerce site. The branding is there, and there is plenty of fun too. In addition, they post regularly, and sometimes post what seems like random stuff but is actually just a great way to connect with their audience. For example, a photo of a wonderfully natural-looking seaside picture for a natural product-loving audience.

BThey not only do everything right, they have actually innovated as well. The company has asked fans to send in photos of themselves using their products in order to win more products (engagement and loyalty). They asked people to like their page, and donated $1 to charity every time they did (interactivity and resonance) and they also include a virtual tour showing fans how to use products.
It’s like being in a Clarisonic store, and the personal aspect makes it fun. The company is also doing an amazing job of making their fanbase get very involved in the page.

At the time of writing, British Airways’ Facebook presence had a total number of 1,836, 881 likes. The brand has really set the pace, and is number one in the airline industry, beating off not inconsiderable competition from brands like EasyJet (who aren’t exactly slowcoaches when it comes to savvy marketing).
The company has worked hard to produce timeline content that is of high quality. They have the budget to make exceptional video content and to deliver high quality images. So they’ve got that covered.
But they also hit the ‘timeliness’ button quite expertly too. It was Father’s Day recently, and the company decided to have a simple, but very effective photograph that summed up the national mood on this special day.
Here it is, and we’d be surprised if you didn’t feel a little warmer inside after seeing this image.
Use humour (and a little cuteness) no matter what your image is. It can work, even for a huge UK company like British Airways. Add a great dollop of good timing and you’re onto a winner.

That’s nearly 18,000 likes in less than 24 hours. Perfect timing.
This company is one of the rising stars on Facebook, and it has managed to see a huge rise in the number of fans in the last six months alone. They are heavy on being ‘small’ and in-touch with their audience, and this shows throughout their posting activity. Recent posting (which is very frequent) has been focused around festivals, special days like Father’s Day and heavy, heavy interaction with the audience.
An example of this can be seen in the post here, which is another example of the many competitions the company runs on their page (the fans like competitions). What’s interesting is the amount of photos that are already up there, all to win a year’s supply of cider. Or is it just because the fans like the brand?

Get your fans involved and give them prizes that are fun when it comes to competitions. Kingstone knows the fans like the drink, and they celebrate this on their page, encouraging tagging and interaction across the board. It’s how to build a tribe, people.

Lynx exploded onto the scene with high quality marketing being an obvious strong point. Their ads are huge and their brand is very strong and clear with men everywhere. Lynx have managed that amazing trick of being relevant to all men, not just twentysomethings.
And one of the most admirable things they do is responding to complaints or questions on their Facebook page. This is something they have worked hard at. Recent spikes in likes and general engagement could have been damaging. They’ve got nearly 1.2 million fans but they do get spikes.
But they beat this with that excellent and responsive customer service.It’s a feature of the best companies on social that they do respond to ‘issues’ on the channels. It helps you appear committed, and it ensures that your loyal fan base don’t feel annoyed. There’s nothing worse than seeing a comment on a page that is troublesome, but is simply ignored rather than dealt with. It says a lot about the company if they can respond.

If there is a problem and a customer has taken to Facebook to tell the world, respond as soon as you can and be as helpful as possible. This makes you a more likeable (literally) brand.
This incredibly successful B2C brand has a long line of big wins behind it, and it has put a lot of effort into the Facebook presence it currently enjoys. With 1.25 million fans behind it, it has a huge responsibility to keep them happy and engaged. And it manages it very well.
One of the best things it does is images. It handles images professionally, and with a particularly smart way of looking at the impact upon the viewer. Sure, it can provide you with hundreds of image of stars wearing clothes all day, if you want. But it knows the secret of great images on Facebook when it comes to apparel.
Nike Football knows that the way to really get people excited about the boots is to show them on their own, not being worn by models or Premier League footballers.
Why does this work? No one really knows. But research has shown that clothing on it’s own is much more likely to engage an audience. Stick a model in the picture and the brand impact is affected.
It helps, of course, that the boots in question are incredibly attractive and gorgeous. You want these boots. And Nike makes them very desirable. It works perfectly.

If you are a B2C and you sell clothing, use models as little as possible in your images. It helps your audience focus on the product.
These guys make the ice cream you remember from your youth. And they make the summer, basically.
But they also make great Facebook posts, and their campaigns and the whole approach is justly rewarded, with nearly 8 million fans. That’s a chunk of customer love, but it has seriously been earned.
Walls have recently decided to go down the seaside humour route (and this makes perfect sense of course) with a series of ads on Facebook that are saucy and ever so slightly risque now and then. It fits the brand perfectly, and each one has comments that are dutifully responded to by the team at the company.
The ads are colourful and bright, again fitting in with the emotions and feelings associated with a beach in summer, and there is some genuinely funny work going on here. The one we have chosen does everything right with sharable imagery, but also manages to pun on a certain space opera most of the planet will be seeing at the cinema on December 2015.

We think this is good stuff. Brand engagement at Walls keeps going through the roof, and this is because they have tapped into the naughty but nice feel of an ice cream product. It is pure branding, and it is a pleasure to witness. An ice cream is a (sometimes, depending on your waistline) forbidden treat.
Wall’s forgives everyone.
Stinkdigital is one of the fastest growing Facebook B2B companies in the UK. They have offices around the world, but they keep things pretty local on their FB outlets.
The company has created a very strong approach to celebrating it’s work on Facebook.This is powerful because they have a loyal client base that wants to see the work up there on the Web, showcased.
And this is what Stinkdigital do best on their facebook pages. They showcase their work as much as they possibly can. If it is being judged in a competition, for example, they will let fans know. But there’s a twist.
There is a real sense of humbleness here. The company genuinely seems proud of what it had achieved, in a slightly shocked way. It makes for a great piece of branding, while sticking to the excellent and effective approach of showing as much of the good stuff as you possibly can on Facebook. People respond to your best work, and Facebook should be a great place to showcase it in the B2B field.

If you have something to be proud of, shout about it. Use Facebook as a great way to showcase your triumphs and your achievements. Even in B2B, clients respond to a humble ‘aw shucks!’ feel.
A rapidly growing company, Funding Circle helps entrepreneurs meet investors, and vice versa. It’s success has come from it’s honest and supportive approach to small businesses seeking funding, and this shows through on its Facebook page.
The people who will look at this Facebook page are mainly going to be entrepreneurs, those who need a financial shot in the arm. And what they want to see is a long string of success stories.
These successes are shown with maximum impact on the Funding Circle Facebook page, which uses video, high quality imagery and basically the stories themselves to build engagement.
Each of the case studies that is represented on the page doesn’t feel like the usual dry and boring case studies. These are real small businesses with real challenges met by the Funding Circle model.
