Travelling has never been easier. Routes are opening up left, right and centre, and more and more people are finding travel affordable.
With this has come the trend of travellers to post their journeys and visits online.
It’s a huge trend, and it really has become big in 2019, with other ‘meta trends’ flourishing within travel too.
This has been huge on social media when it comes to travel. People love snapping their food on social media anyway, but when they’re faced with new cuisine that is exotic and fun, it’s even easier to reach for their camera and take a snap.
There are probably many reasons why people do this. However, perhaps the most compelling reason to snap your food when you’re on holiday is to make everyone at home feel jealous!
What makes it unique to social is that Influencers and everyone else who boards a plane or boat knows that their journey has to be part of a story. Documenting every meal on the amazing, life-altering trip is therefore mandatory.
Storytelling through food helps to build up a more compelling narrative, whether it’s for commercial reasons or just because you want to tell everyone else about another aspect of your life.
The marketing manager for Amazon is called Emily Thomas. However, her day job is far from her thoughts as she travels the world to take frankly breathtaking photos.
This account is one of the most well-known in travel circles on Instagram, and one look at her content and you’ll soon see why. What’s great about her images is her focus on the location, all of which is helped by her ability to frame beautiful shots of beautiful places. It’s really incredible to see.
This is a lady who genuinely loves to travel, and anyone else who is in her league will most likely focus on making sure that the beauty of the location is brought to the fore.
The ‘shot from the window’ has always been a big part of Instagram. There’s no real surprise here.
Instagram travel Influencers have always focused on bringing some kind of envy to what they do. They know that their legions of fans are interested in and fascinated by the amazing travel experiences that the Influencers enjoy. They also know that the best way to build up more loyalty and envy is to take photos from the plane seat.
Why does this work? Well, a huge part of anyone’s travel experience centres around the view from the plane. That moment in any holiday is sure to make people more excited and build a huge buzz into the journey.
Capitalising on that feeling you get from the plane is important, and any social media post that does this is going to gain engagement.
This is an absolutely huge area, and we could spend an entire post (or three) on travel hashtags. Needless to say there are hundreds out there, but some work better than others.
However, saying ‘some work better than others’ isn’t as clear-cut as you think. The scope for personalising holiday hashtags is huge. For example, you can narrow down hashtags to locations. So, for example, if you’re travelling in Bali, the hashtag #Bali makes a lot more sense than pretty much anything else.
Pushing things even further, think about the hashtag #solotraveller. There are many, many people out there right now who are travelling alone, just to see the world on an individual level. Tacking that hashtag onto your travel post makes it very specific, and very engaging.
The truth is, we cannot identify the biggest travel hashtags, because they are so specific. Location means a lot, and if your hashtags are set on location, there’s not much more you need to worry about.
If you’re looking at hashtags for a campaign, the scope for play is endless. Take your time to find hashtags that mean a lot to your audience and you should find your way.
Linked to the location itself, the natural wonder of an area is perfect for social media.
On Instagram, for example, a channel that is built on imagery, taking a photo of a major mountain range can really cause audiences to become engaged. Travel means a lot, but focusing on the expanding of experiences and the mind makes for breathtaking content.
