Online usage 

• ► Social media users grew by 190 million over the past year. As of the start of October 2022, the total is now 4.74 billion; this is an increase of 4.2% over the past 12 months. 
• ► Social media users now equate to 59.3% of the world’s total population.  
• ► Research from the ITU and GSMA Intelligence indicates that more than two-thirds of the world’s population will be using the internet by the end of 2023. This means that twice as many people will be online as offline, this means internet users will achieve the “supermajority” status. 
• ► Research from GWI has shown that the average amount of time people spend on the internet each day has been edging downwards over recent months. The typical working-age internet user now spends 6 hours and 37 minutes using connected devices and services each day, which is 20 minutes per day less than we spent online this time last year. This is a 4.8% year-on-year decline and is less than the time spent online in Q2 2019 – before the pandemic redefined digital behaviour. 
• ► GWI’s research also indicates that people are trying to become more “purposeful” in their use of the internet. Following the rapid rise in time spent using social media during lockdowns, people may be more selective in how they spend their time online now. 

Social media platforms 

• ► With hundreds of millions more active users than its nearest rival, Facebook is still the world’s most used social media platform. 
• ► TikTok ads now reach 945 million adults over the age of 18 each month – 121 million more than they reached 12 months ago. The platform’s ads now reach more than 1 in 6 adults on Earth every month.
• ► The global audience for ads in Facebook Reels has jumped by almost 50% over the past three months. The latest potential reach figure is just below 700 million users – an increase of more than 220 million users since July 2022. 
• ► Instagram Reels ads now reach 758.5 million users, which is 0.5% more than the 754.8 million users that Meta’s ad planning tools reported back in July.
