The April Global Snapshot Report for 2024 reveals latest headlines for digital adoption and use around the world by the users worldwide.
With more than 400 slides to explore, we’ve pulled together some of the top stories within the report:
THE GLOBAL STATE OF DIGITAL
• The global population has reached 8.10 billion people, with an annual growth of 0.9% (74 million new people). Mobile phone users account for 69.7% of the world’s population, with 133 million new users added in the past year.
• Internet users have grown to 5.44 billion (67.1% global penetration), with a 3.4% yearly increase (178 million new users). Active social media users have reached 5.07 billion, a 5.4% increase from last year (over 250 million new users).
GLOBAL INTERNET AUDIENCE CATCHING TV
• With over two-thirds of the world now online, the global penetration of internet users (67.1%) is slightly lower than conventional television viewers (68.1% or 5.52 billion viewers). However, there are already more mobile users than TV viewers worldwide.
• While 1.1 billion of the 8.3 billion mobile handsets are still feature phones (12.8%), limiting internet access, the reach of conventional TV is only increasing fractionally each year.
• Internet penetration has grown by 3.4% over the past year, and at this rate, it should surpass the global penetration of broadcast TV sometime in the first half of 2024.
MEDIA CONSUMPTION DECLINES
• TV has fallen by a further 4 minutes per day over the past year, extending the declines that were detailed in January analysis.
SOCIAL MEDIA USER GROWTH CONTINUES
• Social media continues to grow, with over 250 million new unique user identities added in the past 12 months, taking the global total to 5.07 billion by April 2024.
• This equates to 62.6% of the world’s population, although duplicate and false users mean the actual number of unique individuals may be lower.
• User growth has slowed in recent weeks, with only 37 million new users added in Q1 2024, accounting for just 14% of the annual increase of 259 million.
• However, this slower growth in Q1 echoes a pattern seen in early 2022 and 2023, with user growth typically stronger in Q2 and Q3.
• New datasets this quarter provide valuable insights into indexed social media app use and indexed total time spent per social media app.
