Instagram has started asking users to share their birthdays if they haven’t already shared the information. The development is being implemented to act as a safety feature for young people, and ensure Instagram provides the right experience to the right age group.
Explaining the development, Instagram says: “We’ve been clear that we want to do more to create safer, more private experiences for young people. To do that we need to know how old everybody is on Instagram, so we’ve started asking people to share their birthday with us if they haven’t shared it previously.”
We can also see how the notifications will appear to users to encouraging sharing the information to continue using Instagram:
And if users haven’t shared their birthday, they will see a warning screen for certain content. Only once the date has been shared will users be able to see the content.
This is a welcome development to protect young users of Instagram.
