The Digital 2023 April Global Statshot Report is live. As the biggest statshot published, the report includes 300+ slides and 12,000 words of analysis sharing a wealth of data. The report is an essential read for anyone with an interest in the latest insights and trends for mobile, internet, and social media use around the world. 

Headline figures from the report 

• ▪️ More than 5.18 billion individuals, equating to 64.6% of the world’s population, use the internet
• ▪️ Research from GWI indicates that the amount of time the world spends online continues to decline. The average time spent is now 6 hours and 35 minutes per day using connected tech. This is down by 2 minutes per day compared with the figures from the January Digital 2023 Global Overview Report. Users have also reduced their online activities by 18 minutes per day on average since this time last year. This isn’t to suggest the internet is becoming less important. 
• ▪️ Video calls still rank amongst the most used channels for workplace communication. 87.5% of working-age professionals say video calls are a regular part of their working life. 55% say they attend video calls daily. Video calls even rank ahead of messenger platforms, text messages, and Slack for workplace communication.
• ▪️ 9 in 10 business decision-makers state they seek out recommendations from experts in their network when researching B2B purchases. “User reviews”, “recommendations from people I know”, and “recommendations from industry analysts” take the next three places in GWI’s ranking of channels by importance in B2B research. 

Social media usage 

• ▪️ Social media use is growing, with 150 million new user identities over the past year delivering annual growth of 3.2% 
• ▪️ In GWI’s latest Work survey, more than half of professionals said that their company now uses at least one social media platform to share marketing messages. 
• ▪️ The typical social media user now spends 2 hours and 24 minutes per day using social channels. This is 7 minutes lower compared with the figure in the January report. 
• ▪️ Skai.io indicates that spending on social media ads has also declined by 3% when comparing the first quarter of 2023 to Q1 of 2022. However, the total number of social media ad impressions jumped by 35% during the same period. Although, click-through rates have declined 12% year-on-year. 
• ▪️ Data.ai analysis shows people are spending more time using TikTok. While YouTube is still the world’s second most visited website, TikTok appears to be growing in average time more quickly than YouTube. Average figures for Q4 2022 show that users spent an average of more than 31.5 hours per month using TikTok’s Android app, this was more than 4 hours per month than YouTube. 
• ▪️ The average number of page posts per day on Facebook is 1.92. Posts with links account for 50.9% of total page posts, followed by photo posts at 30.1%, video posts at 17.1%, and status posts at 1.9%.
• ▪️Data from Locowise also shows the average post engagement on Facebook is highest for photo posts at 0.13% for the average page post engagement vs page fans. Link posts receive the lowest level of engagement at 0.03%. Overall, Facebook pages with fewer than 10,000 fans receive the highest level of engagement at 0.32%. Those with more than 100,000 fans receive the lowest level of engagement at 0.05%.
• ▪️ Locowise data highlights that on Instagram, photo posts account for the highest percentage of post type at 45.7%, followed by video posts at 35.7% then carousel posts at 18.6%.
• ▪️ The average Instagram engagement for all posts is 0.71%. It is highest for carousel posts at 1.26%, followed by photo posts at 0.59% and video posts at 0.58%. Overall engagement is highest for business accounts with fewer than 10,000 followers at 0.98% and is lowest for accounts with more than 100,000 followers at 0.57%.
