Downloads continue to rise for the latest social app on the block, BeReal. Seen as a more casual platform, and “not another social network”, BeReal encourages users to show a more authentic version of their lives. Users are prompted at different times each day to share a photo of what they’re doing using the front and rear camera of their smartphone, and they have 2 minutes to do so – limiting the time to set up and edit shots.
BeReal explains:
“BeReal is the simplest photo sharing app to share once a day your real life in photo with friends. Every day at a different time, everyone captures a photo within 2 minutes. Capture and post in time to discover what your Friends are up to.”
BeReal launched at the end of 2019, but this year to date monthly active users have grown by 315% according to Apptopia. What’s driving this growth? The slogan for BeReal is “Your Friends for Real” – this approach is perhaps the driving force behind the interest. The authenticity the app encourages is a step towards moving away from the edited and staged content that users have become used to seeing on social media channels. To continue its growth, particularly among students, BeReal is calling for ambassadors to join their college programme.
